Recycling newspapers for charity

Radha & Anantha Narayanan

In India, as you are aware, we have always believed in recycling things......old newspapers, magazines, old clothes, plastic scrap, metal scrap and so on..... there is a flourishing market for all these and more...

But to combine this with a dash of charity.... that's quite innovative huh?
Cut to the L&T South City gated community in Bangalore and you will see just that... the whole activity conceived, organised and run by Ananth, Radha and their friends...The South City Social Service Group for Charity...

The first Sunday of every month or on some other publicised date, we have volunteers from each apartment block going around from door to door in their respective blocks, collecting old newspapers and magazines with a bright smile and a word of thanks!

These are then bundled and tied up, carried down and stacked at the ground floor reception. Many willing hands make light work, the whole activity is over in an hour or two.

At the appointed hour a mini truck comes trundling up and all the bundles are loaded and hauled away.... to the neighbourhood "old paper mart"....

Here the month's collection is weighed and sold....

Typically, the monthly collection is close to two tonnes and net of expenses the money distributed for charity is in the region of Rs.10,000!!

The proceeds are then accounted and shared out amongst more than half dozen, needy, charitable institutions.....

Three cheers for this great community initiative!!
